From the Depths of the Pit

I was falling

Slipping

Sliding

Drowning

Sinking deep.

Trapped in the deepest

Loneliest

Darkest

Gravest

Lowest pit

I shouted

Pleaded

Begged

Cried

Called Your name.

You have listened

Watched

Loved

Seen

Heard my voice.

My cry for strength

Love

Grace

Freedom

Help

You said, “Don’t worry

Struggle

Wonder

Doubt

Fear.”

You have helped

Saved

Restored

Delivered

Redeemed.

This poem is based on Lamentations 3:53-59 (NASB): They have silenced me in the pit and have placed a stone on me. Waters flowed over my head; I said, “I am cut off!” I called on Your name, O Lord, out of the lowest pit. You have heard my voice, “Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief, from my cry for help.” You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not fear!” O Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause; You have redeemed my life. O Lord, You have seen my oppression; judge my case.

We often feel like either the world or the devil is completely against us–and they usually are. People can be cruel, and Satan is always cruel to us.

But when we call upon God, when we lean upon Him, and when we trust in Him, He will rescue us from the deepest waters. If you are facing your hardest struggle, remember two things:

  1. I am struggling too (and we all are). You aren’t the only one experiencing hardships. You’re not alone.
  2. God has rescued us–and will rescue us again–from the depths of the pit. He wants you to call on His name, and He is strong enough to rescue you from anything.
