Lonely

It’s confession time. And I confess that I’ve been thinking about my future husband a lot lately. It feels like my friends keep getting engaged and that I’m the only dateless girl in the whole entire world. (Maybe I’m just feeling sorry for myself, ahem.)

Whether you’re a guy or a girl, I’m sure you’ve experienced loneliness, too. Loneliness hurts because it taunts us. It tells us, “No one wants you” and “You’re the only one who doesn’t have somebody.” But loneliness is wrong. I hope you already know that God wants you.

Of course, I realize that Valentine’s Day can make loneliness even harder. Just like romantic movies, jewelry stores, and other people’s weddings.

Yay.

Even though loneliness is such a difficult thing to experience, it doesn’t give us an excuse to become desperate for a relationship. Loneliness also doesn’t give us an excuse to throw a pity party. Becoming more self-centered won’t lead us to our future spouse any quicker.

But I also want you to know that feeling lonely isn’t sinful; it’s human. You’re not the only one who feels lonely, and you’re not the only one who wants a boyfriend/girlfriend. We’ve all been there. So I hope this poem resonates with you and gives you the strength to press on and keep waiting.

I think about you ev’ry day.

Where are you?

Where are you?

I dream about you ev’ry night.

You’re so far.

You’re so far.

I want us to meet very soon.

When will we?

When will we?

I long for you to hold my hand.

I see us.

I see us.

I cannot wait to see your face.

Who are you?

Who are you?

Our love will be a dream come true.

I want us.

I want us.

I hope you don’t forget to come.

When will you?

When will you?

God, why do all these feelings hurt?

Please help me.

Please help me.

I need You, God, to get me through.

How can I?

How can I?

I don’t know if you’ll ever come.

I’m lonely.

I’m lonely.

But I’ll hold on, no matter what.

Will you, too?

Will you, too?

No, loneliness is not the end.

I’m waiting.

I’m waiting.

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted…Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You. (Psalm 25:16, 21 NASB)
