Dear Single Girl, I Have More to Tell You

Dear Single Girl,

I know that I recently wrote you a letter about accepting your singleness while still admitting how hard singleness is. But there’s something else that’s just as important that I need to share with you. I truly believe that you are single. For. A. Reason.

So, Single Girl, please find purpose in whatever you do while you wait to date and get married.

What’s Next for Me?

As I said in my last letter, I understand the ache of loneliness, the longings that remain unfulfilled, and the desire to fantasize. I know how hard it is to wait for good things.

Still, I wonder if I haven’t yet gotten married (or dated) because God is calling me to write…at least for now. He instilled in me the desire to be a writer when I was young. As a child and teenager, I wrote short stories and a novel. Now as an adult, I write blog posts, articles, and poetry. Recently, I wrote a book proposal with the goal of landing a book deal soon.

It’s totally possible that I’ll soon meet Prince Charming and lose interest in writing. But for now, while I wait to date and get married, I plan to write (and hopefully find a fulltime job with good benefits, haha). Even though I sometimes hate being single, I don’t believe my singleness is pointless.

What’s Next for You?

Single Girl, I want you to know that God gifts His children to do incredible things for His glory and their good. So what gifts has He given you? What are your passions, ambitions, and dreams? Perhaps God has placed those on your heart because He wants you to find fulfillment while you wait for Prince Charming.

Do you want to be an entrepreneur? Start saving money, do some research, and talk to business owners that you know.

Do you want to be a musician? Join the worship team at church, write music and song lyrics, and post online videos of yourself singing and/or playing an instrument.

Do you want to be a nurse? Find an internship, contact nursing schools about their programs, and ask nurses you know for guidance.

Do you want to be a teacher? Volunteer to work with children, work towards your education degree, and find a school where you can do your student-teaching.

Do you want to be an event planner? Practice planning events for family members and friends, reach out to local event planners about shadowing them, and get the education you need to plan events.

Do you want to be an engineer? Research the engineering programs of universities and colleges, choose a specific track for the engineering you want to do, and start the program.

Do you want to be a writer? Start a blog, send your writing to online and print publications, and come up with book ideas.

Purpose for the Single Girl

Perhaps, in your mind, singleness = floundering. You don’t know what to do with your life. You don’t know if you should go to _____ college. You don’t know if you should apply for _____ job. You don’t know if you should start _____ program. You don’t know if you should take _____ opportunity.

Single Girl, your season of singleness is not a season of wasted time. It may be 10 years, 10 months, or 10 days before you meet Prince Charming. Don’t let a single year, month, or day go to waste in the meantime. Find purpose in who God designed you to be—whether it’s a small business owner, a cosmetologist, or a math professor. And enjoy it!

I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man. (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 ESV)
