Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
Dear Idol, I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately. I'm wondering why I devote so much of my time and energy to you. I mean, you’re not the best thing that’s ever happened to me. In fact, you’ve left me feeling miserable, guilty, and anxious quite often.
I fully believe that true Christians will bear fruit. And that fruit will be obvious to other people, like faithfulness and joy and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). But I don’t believe we are on the deadline that we give ourselves.
I believe God has convicted me that, deep down in my soul, I treasure these people and things more than Him. Yes, I still know Him. Yes, I still love Him. Yes, I still belong to Him. But I've been chasing my fleshly desires.
I know I’m not the only one who struggles with swimsuit season—whether it’s figuring out how modesty is involved, picking a swimsuit that's cute and trendy, or determining who we’re trying to impress—the hot lifeguard or our great aunt. With that being said, perhaps you can relate some of the fears I’ve experienced pre- and post-swimsuit season.
I almost got married last night.
In my dreams, of course. When I woke up this morning, I realized I had had a devastating, awful nightmare...the groom didn’t show up at my wedding.
Unfortunately, we’re still riding this crazy rollercoaster of change. That’s why we as young adults need to hear the truth from our ministry leaders during this time. We can’t change our circumstances, but we can change our perspective. Thankfully, you can help us do that.
Personally, I think Satan wants us to believe the lie that change is bad so that we'll despair. Because when we despair about the changes ahead of us—and the changes currently in our midst—we give up. But oh, dear friends, we can’t give into despair.
I knew God was speaking to me when I had that “little fall.” Although my name is Grace, I’m not very gracious—especially to others. Rather, I’m often haughty…and I fell.
In Bible study, we focus on answering the questions in the book. In Sunday School, we discuss prayer requests about our travels and job transitions. In small group, we talk about the weather, sports, or politics. But, believers are not going to grow in their faith by talking about the weather, sports, or politics.
