Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
Let’s go back to 2018 when Domenick Nati interviewed her and specifically asked if homosexuality is sinful. (Yes, I realize 2018 was five years ago. But I feel more passionate now than I ever have about her response—hence this post). And in essence, she told Domenick, “Well, I can’t respond to that because I’m not God." I can't help but cringe when I think about that response.
Though I’d never read Dr. Carolyn Weber’s memoir Surprised by Oxford, I highly anticipated the release of the movie Surprised by Oxford, which was—yup, you guessed it—based on the book. So when I saw it was coming out in theaters for a limited two-day release, I insisted on going to see it. After spending two hours watching a beautiful yet flawed love story unfold, I walked out of the theater feeling a mixture of bliss and disappointment.
But the recently released Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has drawn far more attention than all of the animated Barbie movies combined. Why? What’s the draw? Is it nostalgia? The A-list actors and actresses in the cast? All the pink? Perhaps it's simply unrealistic expectations.
No, I don’t (solely) regret watching La La Land because Ryan Gosling simply isn’t as attractive as he thinks he is. (I’ve seen guys in the grocery store who are way more handsome than he is.) I honestly regret watching it because I felt convicted not to watch it…and I proceeded to watch it anyway.
Why is the world suddenly so obsessed with Taylor Swift? And why are we—specifically, why are Christians—investing so much of our time and money in an artist who is living in darkness and seems to be proud of it?
But one character whom I’ve liked since Season 1 of Lost is Jack Shephard. Honestly, he’s not particularly attractive. He often looks dirty, grimy, and sweaty (which is purposeful, of course, but is still a turn-off). Still, he’s my favorite character on the show because he’s unwaveringly strong.
I've written about Shawn Mendes’ music once before, and I couldn’t help but address another one of his hit singles, “Treat You Better.” This song is a little dated, but it still plays on the radio. And honestly, it’s a goldmine for me—I have a lot of zingers that I could share with you about this song. Get ready to hate Shawn Mendes’ guts. (Just kidding. I’m not encouraging you hate him—just to evaluate his music with fresh eyes!)
Although Shawn Mendes' song "Stitches" is several years old, I didn't really get into it until recently. I was drawn to the sassy lyrics, the catchy beat, and Shawn Mendes’ voice—of course. But as I listened to this song over and over, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. Why was I listening to this depressing song about a difficult heartbreak with no resolution except…well…death?
