Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
I realize “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” by Shawn Mendes is almost 10 years old, but its message feels timeless in a sense. It’s one of many secular songs about coloring outside the lines. This song is certainly catchy, but it has some questionable lyrics that will hopefully hold you back from adding it to your playlist.
I realize it might seem strange to discuss Revelation in a post about Easter, but I see a clear connection between the events described in Revelation and the events described in the gospels. When Jesus lived on Earth, He said He would (1) die (2) rise from the dead (3) return. The gospels make it clear that He fulfilled the first two promises. While we wait for Him to fulfill the third promise, we need to know and believe the truth. In this post, I’ll focus on four specific truths about His coming that are in Revelation 22.
The goal of getting a book deal from a traditional publisher has spurred much of my writing in recent years, but I haven’t yet achieved that goal. I’ve learned there’s no formula I can follow to make this dream come true. I’ve also learned a few other important things about writing that I want to share with you.
I recently heard a song called “Flowers” on a Christian radio station, and it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard. The music in it is amazing, but so are the lyrics. Samantha Ebert finds the balance between raw honesty and genuine hope. It almost feels like she wrote “Flowers” just for me—and maybe you’ll feel the same way after you listen to it.
Unfortunately, however, I’ll probably never watch The Gorge again—at least, I hope I’ll never watch it again. Frankly, the only positive thing about this movie is the lack of a mustache on Miles Teller’s face. (His facial hair situation in Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t great…to say the least.) But the dull plot, slow pace, and unhelpful message of The Gorge made it very difficult for me to enjoy.
In Part 1, I admitted that I carried many worries about the future with me throughout college. But I also worried about making friends during college. I wanted to ensure I made “enough” friends, which is honestly a silly thing to worry about because no one can determine how many friends is “enough.” And that’s exactly why I’m writing this post—to encourage you to take the pressure off yourself to make friends and instead trust God to provide.
In His kindness, God sustained me through my first year—and my second, third, and fourth years. But I genuinely don’t miss that season of my life because I spent so much time worrying about things I didn’t need to worry about. My hope is that you’ll learn from my mistakes though. Please please please don’t waste your time worrying—especially about the future—while you’re in college.
Maybe you’ve never dated anyone either—or you’ve dated very few people—and you’re afraid of doing the whole dating thing “wrong.” Unfortunately, your fears about dating seem to be getting worse, especially as you get older. As a fellow inexperienced dater, I want to share an encouraging truth with you that will hopefully help you conquer your fears about dating.
I’m a big fan of Paris—at least the idea of Paris. I’ve never actually been to Paris, but it’s on my bucket list. I own several canvas paintings that depict the Eiffel Tower. I even shared a (mostly positive) post about Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris not long ago. But even though it’s set in Paris, the TV show Emily in Paris is something I’ve purposely avoided—for one unavoidable reason.
