Though I’d never read Dr. Carolyn Weber’s memoir Surprised by Oxford, I highly anticipated the release of the movie Surprised by Oxford, which was—yup, you guessed it—based on the book. So when I saw it was coming out in theaters for a limited two-day release, I insisted on going to see it. After spending two hours watching a beautiful yet flawed love story unfold, I walked out of the theater feeling a mixture of bliss and disappointment.
But the recently released Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has drawn far more attention than all of the animated Barbie movies combined. Why? What’s the draw? Is it nostalgia? The A-list actors and actresses in the cast? All the pink? Perhaps it's simply unrealistic expectations.
No, I don’t (solely) regret watching La La Land because Ryan Gosling simply isn’t as attractive as he thinks he is. (I’ve seen guys in the grocery store who are way more handsome than he is.) I honestly regret watching it because I felt convicted not to watch it…and I proceeded to watch it anyway.

Last week, I watched a movie called Finding You, which is based on a fiction book called There You’ll Find Me by Jenny Jones. While I appreciate that Finding You didn't have any sex scenes, I was disappointed by how unrealistic the plot was. The happy ending for the main character—Finley Sinclair—was super unrealistic. After all, what average American student actually studies abroad in Ireland, meets a handsome single actor who's smitten with her, and earns a spot in the Manhattan Conservatory of Music? None that I know of.
When I watched Breakthrough, I almost cried—multiple times. The entire movie felt like an emotional rollercoaster, but maybe that's what made it so powerful. It was incredibly well-made, and I definitely think that it's worth watching, especially if you're in a season of waiting.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the first Unbroken movie, but I remember it being dark and depressing. To be honest, Unbroken: Path to Redemption was also pretty dark and depressing. But it had an incredibly joyful ending.
Overall, the movie used believable actors and actresses. The story was fairly interesting. Though it wasn't as dramatic as some Christian movies, like Courageous, the general story and theme were compelling; and much of the information Lee Strobel discovered was new to me and may be new to you as well.
