Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
You were instantly attracted to him when you met him—and you were instantly impressed with him, too. He’s genuine and honest with you. He asks about everything—from your typical workday to your wildest dreams. He works really hard and has a steady job. He’s sweet, patient, and trustworthy. And his smile is pure magic. Unfortunately, though, he’s not a Christian.
I don’t think that reading a biblical passage is a cure for anorexia. However, I do know that the Truth—specifically from God’s Word—sets us free (John 8:37). If there’s someone in your life who’s recovering from anorexia, perhaps you could share that with him or her. You may also want to share the following verses with him or her because even though they may be the hardest Bible verses for a recovering anorexic to hear, they are the truest words a recovering anorexic could ever hear.
So why was I so obsessed about a beautiful face? Was there more to him than his good looks? I wanted there to be more, but I didn’t know how deep his character was. I should’ve been paying attention to his character first and foremost, but it was really his appearance that attracted me to him.
I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately. I’m wondering why I devote so much of my time and energy to you. I mean, you’re not the best thing that’s ever happened to me. In fact, you’ve left me feeling miserable, guilty, and anxious quite often.
Yes, it’s possible that Song is Solomon is simply an allegory (with fictional characters) that demonstrates God’s love for believers. However, it's normally interpreted as an historically accurate event between Solomon and an actual Shulammite woman. Here are just a few reasons you should read it for yourself.
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to criticize men and women in the Bible, especially when their sins are evident? I mean, how could Jonah run away from God? How could Rebekah play favoritism with her sons and deceive her husband? How could David commit adultery and murder Uriah? But we forget that we, too, can quickly fall into sin.
This poem is based on Ruth 1:16-17, which describes Ruth's loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi. Even though Ruth had just lost her husband, father-in-law, and brother-in-law, she was still determined not to leave Naomi alone. Her courage and loyalty serve as an example for us in our relationships today.
Sometimes, we read Scripture and wonder what we're supposed to learn by reading it. But other times, God gives us a lightbulb moment. And last week, God turned the lightbulb on in my mind. The Scripture passage about our spirit being willing but our flesh being weak (from Matthew 26) finally made sense to me.
But there's more to Halloween than gooey candy and cute costumes. There's also more to Halloween than evil witches and creepy goblins. This holiday requires us to determine—and discuss—our convictions.
