Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
White Bird: A Wonder Story is a movie I probably won’t see again, and there are a couple reasons for that. First, it felt super disconnected from Wonder—the movie it’s supposedly a sequel to. Plus, Wonder came out seven years ago and didn’t really need a sequel. But the second reason—the main reason—I didn’t like White Bird was its misleading message.
But the truth is that any time you spend reading Scripture and praying is not wasted time. If you seek Him, you’ll find Him (Deuteronomy 4:29, Jeremiah 29:13). Don’t let believers—whether they’re well-intentioned or ill-intentioned—discourage you from trying to go deeper with God. This post has a few ideas (not rules) that may help you in your pursuit.
Ed was never satisfied with my efforts though. He demanded more from me. He told me I still wasn’t skinny. He continued to control me because I let him. I should’ve broken up with him sooner than I did. But love is blind, right?
Once Upon a Time is a TV show that was popular several years ago but faded into obscurity. Even though people don’t talk about it much anymore, I decided to try to it—and I was hooked on it for a week or two. I watched episode after episode, making solid progress in the first season. I really wanted to like it, but I couldn’t get past the immorality.
True confession—it’s difficult to not covet my friends’ marriages. Even though I know coveting is a sin, I succumb to this temptation far too often. God’s Word is clear about not coveting what other people have, but how can we avoid it?
I’m a sucker for Disney’s High School Musical series, which is probably why I like A Week Away so much. Yes, the plots and settings and characters are different, but the vibes are the same. Even though I wouldn’t call A Week Away a cinematic masterpiece, it’s definitely worth watching—especially if you’re a fellow fan of the High School Musical series.
Okay, so there are actually many things I struggle to remember while waiting for marriage, but this is one of the biggest. I’ve written other other posts about marriage and how it points to the marriage celebration of Christ and the Church (as described in Revelation). An earthly marriage between a fallen man and woman is a foretaste of what’s to come—but it’s only a foretaste.
I’m aware that the Bible permits us to drink alcohol and that Jesus drank alcohol, so I’m not saying it’s sinful. I’m simply saying it’s important to evaluate your why. If you want to drink alcohol on your 21st birthday because you want to conform to the culture and/or impress your friends and/or get drunk, I encourage you to choose one of these fun alternatives.
I was 13 years old when my friend Alexis* moved away. Losing her was really hard because I’d grown up with her. We’d attended the same church and the same homeschool groups, and we’d even played soccer on the same team. But Alexis isn’t the only friend I’ve lost in my life. Many of my friends have been “friends for a season.” Even though it’s not fun when a friendship ends, it’s not unusual.
