What David’s Life Taught Me About God’s Promises

Hi friends! Today’s post was written by blogger Kori and is about how God worked in the life of David. I know that you’ll find hope and encouragement in this guest post.

An Incredible Story

An unstable ruler. A young rival. Chasing, escaping, and hiding. That’s what I’ve been reading about recently. And no, it’s not an action novel—it’s the book of 1 Samuel.

As a young man, David spent his days in the fields as a shepherd. No one was particularly impressed by him. The prophet Samuel visited David and anointed him as the next king of Israel, but when the anointing oil dried, David’s life remained the same.

Then David was selected to be King Saul’s musician. Perhaps he thought, “Maybe this is how I’ll become king. God is clearly working through this opportunity!”

David’s reputation flourished as he killed a giant and won battles. He earned the adoration of Israel—and the king’s daughter. The throne looked more attainable than it did when he was socializing with sheep. Maybe it felt like God had opened the door for him to finally become king.

But everything that David had done for the kingdom of Israel suddenly didn’t matter to King Saul. Filled with jealousy, he desperately tried to kill David. Though he knew that he was destined for the throne, David had to flee and hide for his own protection.

An Incredible Truth

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. He will send from heaven and save me; he will put to shame him who tramples on me…God will send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness! (Psalm 57:1-3 ESV)

To be honest, I’ve doubted God’s promises in His Word. But I have no real reason to doubt them! The words of Psalm 57—which David wrote while he was hiding from King Saul—give me hope. God didn’t break His promise to David to make him the ruler of Israel, and He won’t break any of the promises that He made in His Word.

So the next time your circumstances cause you to wonder if God is truly good or faithful, remember that He always fulfills exactly what He promises to fulfill.
