I recently shared a post about learning to embrace God’s timing and trust Him with the future. However, there are some things you can do while you wait for God to lead you to what’s next. Here’s a simple list of things you can do to prepare for the future right here and now:
- Pick a broad, practical major if you’re unsure what to study in college. For example, business or communications are pretty general fields and offer lots of possible career opportunities.
- Decide which majors you don’t like. This can help you weed out some options and focus on the majors that truly appeal to you.
- Try new hobbies and activities to discover what you have an interest in. And while you’re experimenting, add some more options to your “not interested” list.
- Find some trusted adults in your life who have career experience in fields that interest you. Ask them about their positions and seek practical advice from them.
- Don’t stop praying. Ask for God to make His will clear and to guide you as you make decisions about the future. Paul told the Thessalonians, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 NASB). That command applies to us today, so pray faithfully and fervently!
God knows your future, and the most important thing you can do is trust Him with it. For now, explore and evaluate your options. Think and pray about what options might work well (or not work well) with the talents and skills God has given you. Seek His will for your life and rely on Him to guide you.
