Are You Believing the Lies of Social Media?

As I get older, I realize more and more how much social media influences the culture. We’ve been consumed by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and a myriad of other social media platforms. But we’ve also been consumed by the lies that they tell us—because they serve as a “shield” that many people use to hide their sins, struggles, and suffering.

Only the Highlights

Sadly, social media has resulted in a huge loss of authenticity in our culture. People typically only post about the positive aspects of their lives—from their birthday parties to their promotions at work to their international vacations. They share about fun décor ideas that they’ve had, adorable accessories that they’ve purchased, and delicious recipes that they’ve concocted. They post holiday selfies, cute photos of their pets, and funny videos of their friends.

The great irony about social media is that we use it to “stay in the know,” but there’s so much that we can’t know from simply viewing people’s posts. Social media doesn’t offer a “behind the scenes” option. We can only see what people choose to post—most of which are superficial snapshots of their lives. And after viewing endless superficial snapshots of people’s lives, it’s easy to feel less-than. Anxious. Insecure. Depressed. Unfulfilled. Envious. Alone.

Friends, why do we voluntarily consume the lies that social media tells us?

More Harm Than Good?

Truth be told, I believe that the disadvantages of social media significantly outweigh its advantages. Yes, it can be used for good—but it can also be used for great harm.

We’ve become envious of lies—of people who aren’t who they claim to be. But we don’t have to be envious any longer. We can find joy—real joy—as we follow the Holy Spirit.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5:25-26 NASB1995)
