Think about the “worst” sins that you’ve committed and how you tried to handle them. Did you obsess about them? Did you worry about overcoming them? Did you keep giving into temptation? Did you deal with them in ways that hurt your relationships with God and others? Unfortunately, when we give in to sin, we usually proceed in a variety of unhealthy ways.
So Much Stronger
When we give in to sin, we often become irritated and impatient, demanding that God remove temptations from our lives. Or we say hurtful words to ourselves (or other people) in our frustration and despair. Or we doubt that God will be able to help us be persistent and diligent in fighting sin.
The problem is that we very quickly forget that God isn’t like us. He’s so much stronger than we are. The only way that we can overcome habitual sin is through His strength, not ours.
The truth is that every sin that you’ve ever committed was paid for by Christ on the cross. He bore the weight of your “worst” sins. He didn’t want anything to stand between you and the Father, so He sacrificed His life to forgive you.
Nailed to the Cross
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. (Colossians 2:13-14 ESV)
I understand that the habitual sin in your life might feel impossible to beat, but it’s not! God wants you to find freedom from it and made a way for you to find that freedom! You’re no longer bound by sin if you belong to Him.
No matter what temptations and sins you struggle with, remember that you can only find freedom by relying on His strength. He nailed your sins to the cross. It’s time to walk forward in faith and obedience!
