Today’s post is very special because it contains thoughts from Catherine Kendrick (one of Alex Kendrick’s daughters)! Alex Kendrick has directed and starred in several Christian films, including Flywheel, Facing the Giants, Courageous, War Room, and Overcomer. I recently asked his daughter Catherine to share about herself and her life as a Christian filmmaker’s kid.
Tell me a little bit about yourself. Who are you in a nutshell?
I am 18 years old and am the third of six kids! The oldest is Josh (22), then Anna (20), then me (18), then Joy (16), then Caleb (14), and then Julia (12). I am currently studying Exercise and Health Science but am switching to Communication in Arts with an emphasis in Studio Art. I hope to take that degree and do something in interior design! I have lived in Albany, Georgia for my whole life. For fun, I enjoy playing soccer, working out, hanging with my family and friends, and painting/drawing.
What has it been like growing up as Alex Kendrick’s daughter? How has being the daughter of a Christian actor and director changed your life?
Growing up was actually normal. I didn’t have an out-of-the-ordinary childhood. I went to a small private Christian school that was a branch of Sherwood Baptist Church. My mom is a stay-at-home mom. My dad has some chill seasons where he is home, and he has some busy seasons where he is either writing, editing, shooting, or speaking. Whatever season he is in, he always supports us and makes time for his family. This is the way it’s always been, so I don’t know any different.
What is the best part about being the daughter of a Christian actor and director?
One of my favorite parts is traveling, whether it be with my dad on a speaking trip or with the whole family on set. I also love spending summers working on set and watching the movies come together.
What is your favorite movie that your dad has acted in/directed? Why?
My favorite movie is War Room. In my opinion, it was the most powerful—both on-screen and onset. It was also the first movie filmed outside of Albany, Georgia. We actually moved to North Carolina for the summer for that movie! War Room was also the first movie where I was old enough to be a part of the crew.
Have you ever been in one of your dad’s movies?
I haven’t had a huge part in his movies. I was just an extra in Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous, War Room, and Overcomer. But I have gotten to work a little onset for War Room and Overcomer.
What is your favorite Bible verse? Why?
As of right now, I don’t have a favorite Bible verse. But one of my favorite books is Ephesians because it goes over my identity in Christ. It’s a book I visit often and read over to remind myself of what I have and what I am as a child of God.
Do you hope to follow in your dad’s footsteps and become a Christian actor and/or filmmaker after college? If not, what do you hope to do after college?
I don’t have the desire to become an actor or filmmaker. However, I do want to be a part of the ministry. After college, I want to do something with interior design, along with possibly being a part of the art department and help design the set pieces for the films.
In honor of Catherine’s love for the book of Ephesians, I wanted to include a passage from Ephesians that addresses our identity in Christ as believers:
So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22 NASB)
