What I Learned About Celebrity Crushes from Win a Date with Tad Hamilton

I wasn’t going to be one of them—a fangirl who has to see every single movie with Actor A because he’s so hot and charming. Until I did become one of them—a fangirl who has to see every single movie with Actor A because he’s so hot and charming.

Thank You, Tom Holland

For me, Actor A is Tom Holland. He’s my celebrity crush. I can own that. I mean, what’s not to love about him? His accent, personality, and appearance speak for themselves.

Besides my younger-self crush on Zac Efron (because he played Troy Bolton in High School Musical), I’d never really crushed on any celebrities. I prided myself on keeping my feet on the ground and my head out of the clouds. After all, what was the point of having a crush on a famous actor or singer? There was zero chance that I’d ever meet him in person.

Cue Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Although I wouldn’t recommend this movie because of some sexual content, I think that it perfectly portrays the lesson that we all need to learn about celebrity crushes—which, honestly, is a less that I’m still learning.

Win a Date with Tad Hamilton is about a girl who has a hardcore celebrity crush and happens to win a date with him. They quickly form a romantic relationship, much to the chagrin of the girl’s coworker who’s secretly in love with her. But she eventually realizes that her celebrity crush isn’t as great as she expected him to be—and that ordinary romance with her coworker is so much sweeter because he truly loves her.

Smelling the Roses

This post is my encouragement for you to wake up and smell the roses—even if the roses around you are few and far between. They’re even fewer and father between in Hollywood.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are parts of His body. (Ephesians 5:25-30 NASB)

Friends, I totally understand how easy it is to melt when you see Tom Holland (for example, ahem) on the big screen in the movie theater. But I also understand how easy it is for gooey feelings about celebrities to turn into obsessions.

Before we let our emotions run wild, let’s step back from Hollywood and look at reality. Who truly loves us and whom do we truly love? No, not Tom Holland, Ryan Gosling, Niall Horan, or _____ [insert name of attractive celebrity]. I think that we’ll find much more fulfillment from loving—and being loved by—the people whom God has placed in our lives.
