Remember the interview I did last year with Brittany Braswell? She’s a Registered Dietician, and she started a podcast called Faith-Filled Food Freedom, where she addresses nutrition and body image from a biblical perspective. Recently, I was a guest on her podcast and talked about eating disorder recovery (especially spiritual recovery). I’m thankful to Brittany for giving me the opportunity to share. When I struggled with anorexia, I let it control my life and it became an idol. However, God wants us to find freedom not only from disordered eating and exercise habits but also from idolatry. The passage below outlines how we can begin to find that freedom—by fleeing idolatry:
Do not be idolaters, as some of them [the Israelites] were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.” Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. (1 Corinthians 10:7-14 NASB1995)
