As a Hallmark movie junkie, I don’t typically enjoy movies like Uncharted. But I do enjoy actors like Tom Holland—hence why I watched Uncharted. Though this movie had a few flaws, its overarching theme was surprisingly good.
The Good News and the Bad News
The main thing I didn’t like about Uncharted was the excessive swearing. Though I’m not super sensitive to swearing, the dialogue was objectively vulgar. That’s unfortunate but not really surprising. Action-adventure movies in particular tend to have lots of foul language and violence. Just be aware that Uncharted has a significant number of swear words, so it may not be the best movie for you to watch, depending on your convictions.
However, I was very pleased with the overarching message of Uncharted: People matter more than possessions.
In short, Uncharted is about a young, slightly reckless explorer named Nathan who teams up with a seasoned explorer named Victor and a secretive explorer named Chloe on a quest for truth and treasure. The characters’ clashing personalities and the slightly unexpected plot twists make the movie engaging overall.
And at the end of the movie, Victor has to make a choice—to save Nathan’s life or become rich. Thankfully, he makes the right choice.
Loving One Another
“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13 NASB1995)
Before Jesus died on the cross, He told His disciples to love each other with the same kind of love He had for them. His example of sacrificial love—which He demonstrated by dying on the cross to pay for our sins—is a love that the disciples were commanded to imitate. And we’re commanded to imitate it, too.
In Uncharted, Victor sacrificed his wealth for Nathan’s life. Though it wasn’t easy, Victor did the right thing—and that’s a refreshing thing to see in a movie.
Is Uncharted a perfect movie? Nope. But remember—there’s no such thing. I believe that it’s important to have balance in deciding what to watch and not watch.
When I think about the limited number of movies with engaging stories and biblical themes, I feel discouraged. But that’s ultimately why I liked Uncharted—because it reminded me that there are good movies out there. We just have to be choosy.
