Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
I know that you wonder if one day—someday—all of the eye pain, neck pain, and back pain will pay off. If the 45-minute commute, the horrendous traffic, and the interstate driving will pay off. If the long, lonely hours of staring at a screen trapped inside white prison walls will pay off.
Still, it took me two months—two very long months—to find a job after graduating from college. I was definitely giving up hope, but I kept applying for positions and having interviews and receiving autogenerated rejection emails. I felt so behind. Was my feeling of "behind-ness" normal?
For today's post, I have the privilege of sharing an interview that I recently did with Catherine Kendrick (one of Alex Kendrick's daughters)! Alex Kendrick has directed and starred in several Christian films, including Flywheel, Facing the Giants, Courageous, War Room, and Overcomer. I recently asked his daughter Catherine to share about herself and her life as a Christian filmmaker's kid.
As I write this post I’m preparing to graduate from college. I had four lovely years at a college where I met new friends, found a church that felt like home, and led a discipleship group of six great gals. I attended many memorable student events, played keyboard for campus chapel services, and tutored an amazing girl named Lexi. I used the word “community” way too much, sat in local coffee shops as I watched people interact, and discovered my favorite local restaurants. I enjoyed being at college. But now I must return to my actual home—in the brand-new territory called "adulthood"—and I’m not ready.
Some soon-to-be-college-grads whom I know have plans for the future already. They already have jobs lined up, they’ve already met Mr. Right, or they’ve already chosen to further their education. But I don’t have anything set for my life after April. And that scares me.
May is approaching so quickly, isn’t it? The day when you wear your cap and gown, reach for your diploma, and finally enter adulthood will indeed be bittersweet. Everyone tells you that college is the best time of your life and that post-college will be the worst time of your life. Perhaps the best time of your life will officially be over in approximately three months. So you panic.
My. Senior. Year. What a scary combination of words. At least, I’m really scared by that combination of words. Of course, I have the usual concerns about doing well in my classes and juggling work with school. But more than that, I’m worried about what I’m going to do after graduation in May. What the heck am I going to do with the rest of my life?
As you probably know, getting drunk and doing drugs at work is unwise because you’ll get in trouble. They’re definite no-no’s, along with a host of other obvious no-nos, like stealing from your company and vandalizing your office. But there are two subtler no-nos that are rampant in the workplace today that may not get you fired but are still sinful in God’s eyes and have negative consequences.
I quickly realized a trend in my office. Employees often asked to speak with the other people in my office, but they never asked to speak with me. And sometimes I just wanted someone to want me.
