Where God's Word Meets Our Mess
To be honest, I’ve struggled with idolatry for years. I want to believe that I simply have chronic idolatry, but I know that’s just a lie from Satan. Whether I want to admit it or not, idolatry doesn’t just “happen” to me; it's a choice. I choose to worship idols. I choose not to let them go. I choose to serve them when I should serve Christ.
Though some people can easily fight lies about their body image, I can’t. Because of my history with an eating disorder, these lies feel incredibly real to me. The devil’s tormenting seems too great to bear sometimes. Unfortunately, I’m often quick to believe his lies because I lack the motivation to fight against them. But this leads me to become depressed and frustrated.
We can blame our bad habit of chronic worrying on our circumstances by claiming that they merit our worry. But to be blunt, all of our worries (including mine) have doubt at their core.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the first Unbroken movie, but I remember it being dark and depressing. To be honest, Unbroken: Path to Redemption was also pretty dark and depressing. But it had an incredibly joyful ending.
Sometimes, we wander to sinful addictions and habits that ensnare us. Other times, we wander to Satan's lies because they seem more believable than God's Truth. And other times, we wander to self-pity and self-defeat because our situation seems to difficult to handle. But take heart, Wanderer. You don't walk alone.
Courage is more common than we think. Every single day, we are faced with opportunities to be strong and courageous…or to fearfully back down. I often choose to fearfully back down. I could try to complicate the reasons why I do this, or I could admit that I’m simply terrified and unwilling to trust my Savior.
Do you ever feel like you’re living a blah spiritual life? I definitely do. I’ve been a Christian since I was a little girl, so I’ve learned how I should act and what I should do as a Christian. But sometimes I get tired of doing the "right" thing.
However, Christianity is different. It says, “Everything is going to be okay” and can promise a bright future. Maybe that future won’t come today or tomorrow, but hope is indeed in our future. In fact, we can have that hope today.
