Pies and Promises

When I hear about Thanksgiving, I immediately think of pie—my favorite Thanksgiving dish. Apple or pumpkin. Warm. Crusty. Sweet. Pumpkin with whipped cream and apple with ice cream. Yes please….

You probably think you know what this post is about. You probably think I’m going to say something cliché, like, “But there’s more to Thanksgiving than food and football.”

You know the drill. You know that thankfulness to God is what Thanksgiving is all about.

But what if you don’t feel thankful? What if you feel like you’re losing a spiritual battle right now…or losing a battle at work, with your spouse, with your health, with your kids, with school, with church, or with your sanity?

I’m simply writing this post to remind you that you always have something to be thankful for.

I know you don’t want to hear that in the midst of your trials, but it’s true. Saying “Thank You” to God is important for strengthening your faith—whether you feel thankful or not.

In all circumstances, God is the same God. He doesn’t change, and His love remains forever.

If you feel overcome by sin…

Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. (Romans 7:24-25 NASB)

If you feel unloved…

Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His faithfulness is everlasting .(Psalm 136:26 NASB)

If you feel like your life is a losing battle…

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 NASB)

If you feel alone…

…For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV)

If you feel like the world is against you…

…If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31 NKJV)

If you just need a reason to thank Him…

The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things. (Acts 17:24-25 NASB)

This Thanksgiving may not feel cozy, warm, and cuddly. I’m sorry if this holiday is hard for you and your family.

But you haven’t been forgotten or deserted or forsaken.

That’s enough reason to praise God this Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!
