How to Hold On to Hope While You’re Waiting (Part 2)

Last week, I published Part 1 in this series about holding on to hope during the wait. In that post, I shared a practical way to remain hopeful while waiting, and I’m going to share another in today’s post. Like me, you might be waiting for marriage—or you might be waiting for something entirely different. Either way, this post is for you in your season of waiting.

Trusting God’s Timing for the Future

One of my favorite quotes is from a book by Rosaria Butterfield. In her book The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert: An English Professor’s Journey into Christian Faith, Rosaria shared, “I remember someone telling me that God doesn’t act quickly, he acts suddenly.” This quote is comforting, but it’s also convicting. As a girl who loves creating schedules and marking up my calendar, I wish I could see all the details of God’s plan for my life—especially when I’ll meet my future husband, fall in love, and get married.

But if I knew exactly when God was going to work, I wouldn’t need to trust Him. Not knowing His plan is what strengthens my faith in His character and promises. It helps my self-reliance turn into God-reliance. The writer of Hebrews said, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1 ESV).

As finite human beings, we don’t get to see the future, which means we can either trust God’s timing or worry about the unknown—but only the first option allows us to hold on to hope while we’re waiting.

Can our situations change instantly, without any notice or warning? Absolutely. Can years and years of hoping, waiting, and praying for something come to a beautifully abrupt halt? Definitely. But the not knowing is actually a blessing because it builds our faith in the Lord.

When the Wait Is Over

Ultimately, the challenges in our lives—including waiting—can lead us closer to God or farther from God. I wrote about this in the last chapter of my new book The Ring by Spring Ruse. (Spoiler alert: The end of this book isn’t about me finding love; it’s about me continuing to wait.)

But whether my season of waiting lasts a few more days or the rest of my life, I want to be closer to God when it’s over. If you have the same desire, hold on to hope by remembering how He’s worked in the past and trusting His timing for the future. His perfect plan for your life is unfolding, friends.
