This poem was inspired by a comment someone made that left me feeling, well, completely defeated as a single young woman. Essentially, she asked about my relationship status and then—upon hearing I was single—proceeded to warn me against “being too picky” because my biological clock was ticking. “Yes, I’m fully aware of that, but thanks for sharing,” I wanted to say in reply.
If you’ve ever felt completely defeated like I did that day, you should read this poem—not because I’m an incredible poet but because God is an incredible God. He can change your relationship status in an instant if that’s what He wants to do. Even if he doesn’t, He loves you. And He’s bigger than this, friends.
God is bigger
Than your worries about never being wanted
Than your fears about being alone forever
God is bigger
Than your pre-breakup anxiety
Than your post-breakup pain
God is bigger
Than your disillusionment about dating
Than your doubts about marriage
God is bigger
Than your regrets about the past
Than your pain in the present
Than your uncertainty about the future
God is bigger
Than the desires that fill your heart
Than the questions that run through your mind
Than the loneliness that weighs down your soul
God is bigger than all of those things
Because He is bigger than everything
If God gave a child
To Sarah
To Rebekah
To Rachel
To Hannah
To Elizabeth
In their barrenness
Then He’s big enough to lead a godly man into your life
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 113:7-9 ESV)
