I have a secret: In my drawer, I have a pair of jeans that’s too small for me. I’ve had the jeans for years, but I don’t wear them anymore because they’re tight and uncomfortable. I keep them because I’m scared to let them go. I don’t want to admit that they no longer fit me.
To be honest, accepting my size—and accepting my body in general—is so difficult for me. I believe it’s difficult for most girls and women. Perhaps it’s difficult for you.
But your height and weight—and every other aspect about your body—were chosen by God. He didn’t make a single mistake when He created you, and it’s so important to accept His design. Yes, acceptance is easier said than done, but here are a few things that can help you with the process:
1. Ask God to help you accept the body He’s given you.
Every part of your body was designed by God with intentionality and creativity. No one else has the exact same body as you—it’s unique! If you’re struggling to accept the body He designed for you, ask for His help and strength.
2. Find a few outfits that fit you really well.
Ask your mom, sister, or best friend to go shopping with you. Try on different kinds of clothes, get their advice on the outfits, and pick a few favorites. Have confidence in their advice and enjoy what you choose to buy. The outfits might not be your typical style, but if they fit you well, embrace them.
3. Don’t get beauty advice from the internet or social media.
Honestly, the tips and suggestions you find online or on social media could be fact-based—or they could be opinion-based. Don’t wreck your self-esteem by taking advice from the culture. The culture (and its advice) changes rapidly, but God never changes. Focus on the words He speaks to you through prayer and in His Word.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, beauty is about your attitude, not your shape or size. You don’t have to squeeze into a specific size to be pretty or valuable. You may never love your body, but accepting—and appreciating—the way God designed it genuinely matters.
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16 NASB1995)
