You didn’t literally write it at the top of your Christmas wish list, even though you wanted it the very most. You didn’t tell your parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, or siblings what you truly wanted when they asked, although you honestly didn’t care about getting anything else. You didn’t want anyone to know what your secret wish was, so you didn’t tell them that what you actually wanted for Christmas was a boyfriend.
The Only Christmas Wish
Starting on January 1, 2020, you prayed every single day until Christmas that you would get a boyfriend. You were determined to meet a special guy by December 25th. You kept your eyes open all the time, but your options seemed limited.
With every prayer you prayed, you thought of more and more friends who had met their significant others last year. And you became more and more determined to find your significant other this year. The new iPhone didn’t seem as important to you anymore. Neither did the vintage vinyl records, the laptop, or the Amazon gift card. All you wanted was a guy—to wrap you up in his arms when you get cold, share his hot cocoa with you on snowy days, and send you red roses during the holidays.
According to Hallmark, finding a special someone at Christmastime was supposed to be relatively easy. In real life, however, you discovered that it’s basically impossible. You couldn’t figure out the formula for true love that those gals used because, somehow, you ended up spending another Christmas without a boyfriend.
When Reality Hit
At first, you were angry at all the dating, engaged, and married couples in your life. Then you were angry at all the singles in your life. Then you were angry at God.
You were certain that this was going to be the year you found true love. You were determined that you wouldn’t spend this Christmas alone. You genuinely believed that you would have someone to kiss under the mistletoe in 2020.
To make yourself feel better, you tell yourself that by next Christmas, you’ll meet the right guy. But you also wonder if you’ve lost your chance at finding someone to spend the rest of your life with.
Between feelings of hopefulness, you collapse into helplessness. You shove your old collection of Hallmark DVDs to the back of your closet. You crumple up your wish list for 2020 and throw it in the garbage. You spend the day after Christmas crying into your pillow and wondering why you didn’t meet the right guy this year.
Home for You and Me
A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, is God in His holy dwelling. God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, only the rebellious live in parched lands. (Psalm 68:5-6 NASB)
When you feel like you’re always going to be alone, remember the One who brings people together. The One who builds families. The One who leads individuals to each other.
But even before you see God’s hand guiding you to a soulmate, also remember that He is your Father. He is your Advocate. He is your Home. He is your Rescuer. Right now.
Hard hearts stay thirsty, but soft hearts are watered. As you wait for the Lord to do the seemingly impossible, make sure that your heart is soft—ready and willing but also patient and trusting.
