When Will My Life Begin? A Parody for Christian Single Girls

We all know that many Christian single girls go to Christian colleges to meet their future husbands. They may not admit it, but if you observe their behavior for a few months, you’ll be able to see it. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to meet Prince Charming while you’re at college, and it’s true that many couples meet at college. But for the Christian single girls who go to Christian colleges and don’t meet their future husbands—and I promise that this isn’t as rare as it feels—I want you to know a few things.

First, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. Being single at a Christian college doesn’t mean that you’re ugly or un-fun or a bad Christian necessarily. Second, there are other single girls just like you at your Christian college who want to be dating/married and aren’t. Find them and form relationships with them because singleness is better together! And third, perhaps most importantly, you can still have a life without a guy. Christian single girls who don’t find their guys at Christian college often ask themselves what Rapunzel in Tangled asked herself: “When will my life begin?” We wonder when our real lives will start…because our lives start when we find Prince Charming, right?

The truth is that your life started when you trusted Christ as your Savior. That’s not the fun answer, but it’s the honest answer. And it should matter to you.

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. (2 Peter 1:2-3 NASB 1995, emphasis mine)

To have some fun with this idea of embracing the lives that God has given us—whether we’re single or married—I wrote this parody of “When Will My Life Begin?” from the Disney movie Tangled. I hope it makes you smile or even laugh out loud.

The Parody

18 years old, the usual four-year plan prepped
Start on the bachelor’s degree in something interesting
Get all the A’s and do all the sports that I can
Sign up again
And by then
I’m like 19

And so I’ll join a club or maybe two or three
I’ll add some church activities to my itinerary
I’ll plan some campus events and switch my major and basically
Just wonder when will my life begin?

Then after sophomore year, it’s time for study groups
And coffee shop exploring
And hiking and hammocking
Then I’ll learn a new instrument
Maybe sing in a band
Ask a friend to a dance!

And I’ll join some more clubs if I have time to spare
I’ll sign up to be an RA for the fall of next year
And then I’ll wait and wait and wait and wait somewhere
Stuck in the same place I’ve always been

And I’ll keep wonderin’ and wonderin’, and wonderin’, and wonderin’
When will my life begin?

Tomorrow night will be my graduation
Just like they have every single May
What is it like beyond this college campus?
Now that I’m older, I’m not sure I want to know
