Why I Don’t Like “Somebody to You” by Rachael Lampa

“Somebody to You” is a popular Christian song Rachael Lampa released in 2023. At first, I loved this song. It really resonated with me because—like Rachael—I’ve struggled with insecurity about my popularity and success. The lyrics are vulnerable (which is honestly rare in the Christian music industry). But after I heard her perform “Somebody to You” in concert, my opinion totally changed.

Singing for Somebody

In a nutshell, “Somebody to You” is about the difficulty Rachael has in releasing her desire to please people. She describes the pressure she feels to be popular, successful, and famous. But ultimately, she recognizes none of those things matter because—with or without her worldly success—she matters to Christ.

This song’s lyrics are amazing—but I have difficulty believing they’re genuine.

And that’s because I saw her sing this song at a concert with two artists who seemed very ingenuine—Andrew Ripp and Blessing Offor. Rachael’s performance didn’t really bother me. But when Andrew and Blessing performed, the vibe they gave off was “I don’t actually care about Christian music or Christianity in general; I’m only here singing Christian music because I couldn’t make money singing secular music.”

That vibe just didn’t jive with “Somebody to You” (or any of the songs the artists sang that night). The irony was almost too much for me to handle.

The Great Irony

Honestly, the entire song contradicts the words (and attitudes) of Andrew and Blessing—but the bridge and the chorus felt particularly ironic:

I release my reputation
The name that I was making for myself
For a story only You can tell
If You said I was to die for
Then I don’t have to strive for Your attention
‘Cause my heart is worth nothing less than everything, ooh

Don’t gotta be somebody when I’m already somebody to You
Got nothing to prove anymore
So there’s nothing to lose anymore
You’re gonna keep on loving me for more than just the things that I do
I’ll sing it till there’s no doubt
Nobody can count me out
‘Cause I’m already somebody to You, ooh
I’m already somebody to You, ooh

If Christians truly don’t need to prove our worth to the world, then why do they keep trying to?

A More Rewarding Goal

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. (Galatians 1:10 NLT)

The irony-filled concert I recently attended opened my eyes to the uncomfortable truth that even Christians desire attention from the world.

While Andrew, Blessing, and Rachael might be great people with great intentions, every follower of Christ should have one goal in life: to please Him. I totally understand how hard it is to not seek worldly success, but trying to make people like us is foolish (and exhausting, as Rachael says in Verse 1 of “Somebody to You”). The Savior we serve deserves all of our attention.
